On March 9, 1959, Miss Barbie Millicent Roberts from Willows, Wisconsin to be exact; was introduced at the New York Toy Fair in her signature black and white swimsuit.
The original price was $3 and Target (love them:) has a 50th anniversary commemorative doll on sale this week of her birthday for the original selling price of $3. She comes with a new accessory…a cell phone. Imagine that.

There is also a classic retro Barbie version that is a perfect replica to the original 1959 doll pictured here, and includes a fashion black gown and some other cool original accessories for $39.99 of course.
No wonder I liked Barbie so much as a young girl. I never knew she was also born in Wisconsin (like me) and has always loved black and white (as much as me)!!!

LoL Dawn : ) or should I call you Barbaie : ) I love the new photo of you on your blog...looks good. Is it August yet? : ) Hope your weekend was a good one.
I have a deep love for Barbie-she and I will BOTH be 50 this year, so that makes it more special. I also own 300 versions of her, which I would love to pass on to someone new.LOL! Your new photo is beautiful-as are you!
Your new blog design rocks!
I still own my Barbie dolls!I haven't many as Karriann (WOW, I'm astounded!!) but I enjoy looking at them sometimes..
This black and white version is terrific!
Monica.
Who would have thought she'd last 50 years. She is actually kind of shocking looking in her debut incarnation, considering Mamie Eisenhower was First Lady.
